"Perfect" Exercises

You may have heard someone talk about a “perfect” exercise that they do or that they have heard about.  Usually, they mean that it's perfect for them and that they like it a lot.  That’s very important, of course, as we probably will stick with an exercise or exercise program that we like.  But, are there any exercises that really are perfect?  And, how can you determine if an exercise is perfect or not?  It would be nice if a person could get away with only doing one exercise that would take care of all his needs for physical activity…

In my report entitled the K*I*S*S* Blueprint for Fitness, I emphasized that a person should get three types of exercise:
  • Strength
  • Endurance (cardio)
  • Flexibility
I also tried to make it clear that a person’s strength exercise program must include five movements:
  • Pushing
  • Pulling
  • Rising from a squat position
  • Rising from a bent over position
  • Sitting up from a lying down position

If a person takes care of his flexibility requirement by stretching, twisting, etc. before he does his strength and endurance exercises, what is left are the five strength movements plus endurance work.  Six things.  I've come up with a scoring system for rating supposedly perfect exercises.  It goes like this: 5 points for doing endurance exercise and 1 point for each of the five strength movements.  So, a perfect score is 10.  You can see that, unless you do some endurance exercise, your score will be pretty lousy!  Always aim for a 10!

In the following pages, I’m going to evaluate a number of exercises that I feel are almost perfect.  I’ll give them a score using this procedure and then discuss what a person should do to make them perfect.

By the way, the K*I*S*S* Fitness Program gets a score of 10.  Of course, it’s a program, not a single exercise.  You can use this rating system for exercise programs too!
