The K*I*S*S* Fitness Program for Kids

PictureSteve's kids. Margie, age 12, and Win, age 15.
Boys and girls don't get enough exercise!  When I was a kid, as soon as school ended, we were gone until suppertime.  We might play ball in the school yard or play "cowboys and Indians" in the woods.  We were always on the run.  No wonder that overweight kids were a rare occurrence then. Now, kids have an assortment of video entertainment devices at their fingertips,  When they get home from school, they typically will park themselves in front of a TV or computer and might even sit there till suppertime.  The only exercise they get will be from pushing buttons with their fingertips!  Hardly a balanced fitness program!  To complicate things further, kids rarely play together outdoors. Sports are generally supervised by adults.  No more "Sand Lot" baseball!  I feel this is a very sad state of affairs. Although I believe that the best approach to exercise for kids is for them to simply "go outside and play," it appears that this may truly be a thing of the past.  I strongly feel that something must be done to fill this void in kids' lives when it comes to physical activity.

A partial solution to this dilemma is the K*I*S*S* Fitness Program for Kids.  It's a shortened version of the K*I*S*S* Fitness Program and is aimed at middle school and high school youth.  The program is simple and progressive and can be used alone or in a group setting.  It's an ideal school program because anyone can do it regardless of their physical condition when they start.  If it's used as a school program, it would be advisable for the instructor of the program to use the chapter on "Group Activities" in the K*I*S*S* Fitness Program as a guide.

One of the best ways to get your kids to exercise is to do it yourself!  If you want your kids to be more than couch potatoes, you have to set an example!  It's great fun to do things with your kids.  Why not exercise with them?  Why not do this program with your kids?  I have done it with mine and now my boy and I continue to use parts of the program in conjunction with our weight training program.  If you do this, the entire family will get in shape and you will have fun doing it.  I guarantee that, in addition, everyone will become a bit closer too.  That might be the most important thing.  I proudly note that my kids are the exercise models for the book.
